1X05When a man has his arm bitten off in the woods of New Jersey, it seems that the mysterious bigfoot named 'The Jersey Devil' has returned again after killing a number of people back in the 1940's and 50's.

Mulder decides to investigate this case (well, why wouldn't he) and comes across a place where the homeless camp out but these homeless have some very useful information. After one of the tramps tells Mulder that he has seen the bigfoot, Mulder decides to camp out for the night and try to catch a glimpse of the 'devil'.

He sees the mysterious beast which quickly runs away but Mulder is soon pulled over by the police and tossed in the 'drunk tank'. Scully has to bail him out and it seems that no one believes Mulder.

But when they find out the monster has been spotted near an abandoned warehouse, M & S quickly travel there to track it down. Mulder is attacked by the bigfoot who almost rips his lungs out but Mulder describes this beast as 'beautiful'. Mulder's protective mode has now been engaged, Starfleet (sorry, a bit of Star Trek slipped in there) and he must track down this woman before the sheriff does. Unfortunately the latter happens and the beast-woman is killed.

It seems that the legend dies there except for the ending which opens up our minds when the beast's offspring are seen in the woods ready to start a new life and to be tracked down by two FBI agents!

Rating: 4 out of 10
Not the best episode of the first season but still relatively interesting. We hardly get a glimpse at the monster and it just seems all too 'B' movie-ish. At least Chris Carter actually decided to give Scully a date for which will be the first time (out of two!) in the X-Files universe.
Nitpicking
Yet another of those non-problemo episodes which does seem to occur most often when it's Chris Carter who's holding the pen though surprisingly, he didn't show us at his best yet with this one.
