2X15Mulder and Scully investigate the case of voodoo gone badly wrong as they travel to a Haitian Refugee Camp to solve a mysterious number of deaths.

Private McAlpin is having problems at home and is finding himself shouting at everyone. As he sits down to breakfast he sees maggots crawling around in his cereal bowl so swiftly takes off in his car in fear. When he looks into the rear view mirror he sees the reflection of a disgusting face which leads him to crash into a tree killing him instantly. The tree though has a distinct voodoo marking on the bark.....

The agents visit the camp to make sense of a similar number of deaths including McAlpin's. Interview the private's wife they discover that she believes that he was killed by a voodoo curse and shows them a shell found in their sand box with the same voodoo marking as on the tree and the stool of a private who hanged himself a few weeks earlier. Shortly after, the agents talk to base commander, Colonel Wharton who says that the soldiers are suffering extreme stress due to the hostile refugees. Meanwhile, Scully takes a look at McAlpin's body in the base's morgue but instead finds that it has been replaced by the body of a dog. Mulder also talks with one of the refugee's, Bauvais who claims that Wharton will not let them return home which is why they are being so hostile.

When the agents leave, they find a piece of barbed wire round the steering wheel of the car which pricks Scully. As they drive off we get a glimpse of the same voodoo marking underneath the agent's car. Later at night as they are still driving, they discover Private McAlpin walking in the nude around on the road in a daze. Mulder believes he has become a zombie which is why he was pronounced dead. This makes Mulder think about what happened to the other Private who was buried but when they try to take a look at the body, they discover an empty grave and a young boy, Chester who is collecting frogs for Bauvais' voodoo. Chester runs off though and when Mulder traps him in a place where he can't escape he finds that the boy has disappeared and instead he sees a black cat.

One of the soldiers there who was following them warns them that they are "in the middle of something they don't understand". Meanwhile, Wharton orders Bauvais to be beaten and Mr.X tells Mulder that Wharton is looking for revenge for the deaths of his men in the last Haiti war.

Later, in Scully's rented appartment she finds the soldier who warned them dead in a pool of blood and Mulder also finds McAlpin again who is this time carrying a knife covered in blood. The agents go back to question Bauvais but they find that he is dead which prompts the Colonel to basically tell them to "get lost". Mulder and Scully find upon further investigation that McAlpin and the other soldier who "killed himself" both put forward complaints against Wharton for mistreatment of the refugees. Later at the cemetery, Mulder spots Wharton performing a voodoo ceremony over Bauvais's coffin so he leaves Scully alone who suddenly sees a person rip through her own hand and grab her by the throat. She manages to grab a voodoo repellent in time and save herself from the nightmare she is having.

Meanwhile, Mulder finds that Wharton is dead after Bauvais rose from the dead and killed him before returning to his coffin. It was Wharton who wanted the same voodoo that Bauvais was performing which was killing the soldiers.

Inquiring on the young boy, Chester they find that he was killed a few weeks earlier in a riot which stuns them. Meanwhile, Wharton's coffin is lowered into the ground as we see him inside it screaming and kicking to get out. He is very much alive......

Rating: 3 out of 10
An episode that is really not that good at all. Completely over the top, even for The X-Files. I mean, the final part where we see the hand rising out of Scully's hand and Bauvais rising from the dead are both very badly executed and this makes the whole episode feel like a fill in for the next "mythology" episode. Howard Gordon once again shows that he is one of the worst writers on staff and the acting by the guest stars doesn't help either.
Nitpicking
Even though it seems as though it was rushed, there are absolutely no problems with this episode.
